The Chesapeake was
a favorite hideout for pirates becase it gave them plenty of
protected coves
where they could repair their ships after a busy winter of plundering.
The
Chesapeake had its share of home-grown buccaneers, but most came from all
corners of the globe.
They preyed on Spanish shipping in the Caribbean during
the winter and spent their summers off the
Virginia Capes and in the
Chesapeake.
From the late 1600s to the early 1800s, Pirates were a force to
be reckoned with in the Chesapeake.
From Historic St. Marys City to Tangier
Island to the offices of the royal governors, people feared pirates
like
Blackbeard and William Kidd. The HMS Shorham and pirate ship La Paix fought
one of the bloodiest battles ever waged on the Bay.
"The Pirates of
Chesapeake Bay" tells the story of the pirates and the effort to defeat them.
This documentary on DVD is now
